We are delighted to launch a new and exciting role within our company:

General Manager

Swarkestone Nursery & Garden Centre is an independent, family-run store. We are regarded as one of the largest retail nurseries in Derbyshire. We have grown significantly over the past 20 years, and are now looking for a forward thinking, confident individual to help take our business to the next level. The position will be permanent and full-time, and you will be required to work 50% of weekend days.

The varied nature of the role means that alongside a team of departmental managers you will be required to oversee garden sundries retail, plant area, giftware, Christmas, nursery plant production and catering.

The position requires someone with a strong business focus. It is important that the right candidate has a combination of commercial (retail) experience and horticultural interest. We are looking for someone with at least five years’ experience in a similar retail environment, with at least two years in a management role. This does not have to be restricted to a garden centre environment, but does need to be in a similar retail environment attracting A/B customers. You will need to have had experience with EPOS software and have excellent computer skills.

The right candidate is someone who possesses excellent customer service and people management skills. You must be well organised and a good, calm communicator. You will be well motivated and enjoy growing sales and profitability.

As a Garden Centre Manager, you will manage, lead, inspire and develop an amazing team and ensuring all customers have a great in store experience.

  • Oversee all aspects of the business’ operation, including garden centre, nursery and catering
  • Develop and implement strategies to achieve business goals and objectives
  • Ensure high levels of customer satisfaction by providing excellent service and resolving any issues or complaints
  • Manage and train staff members, including hiring, scheduling, and performance evaluations
  • Monitor financial performance and budgeting to optimise profitability
  • Collaborate the departmental managers to coordinate operations and ensure smooth functioning of the business
  • Maintain a safe and secure environment for customers and employees by enforcing safety policies and procedures
  • Stay updated on industry trends and best practices to continuously improve the businesses operations

Plant Area Assistant


We’re a family-run nursery and garden centre based in South Derbyshire, looking for enthusiastic people to join our team. If you love people and plants we want to talk to you!


Our Plant Area is home to a wide variety of herbaceous perennials, shrubs, alpines, trees, fruit and house plants.

Candidates must have strong horticultural knowledge, and be able to demonstrate a very high level of plant knowledge. We place a very high value on customer service, hard work and teamwork.


Roles & Responsibilities

  • Maintaining and watering plant stock. Jobs to include weeding, pruning, deadheading etc.

  • Maintaining a strong and up-to-date horticultural knowledge

  • Striving to satisfy customer expectations including assisting customer with advice and carrying products to cars

  • Merchandising and creating visual displays to help sell products

  • Processing new delivered stock using our EPOS system

  • Work is fast-paced and requires manual handling

  • General housekeeping and any other duties required by management


We are able to offer part time work working three days Sundays through to Tuesdays, and also have the opportunity to offer seasonal flexible working patterns (working more hours April-July, and less throughout Winter).

Normal working hours are 9am-5.30pm Monday-Saturday, and 9.30am-4.30pm on Sundays.
